The Ultimate Hair-Care Routine (That’s Clean, Non-toxic and Effective)
The Importance of a Hair Care Routine
Maintaining a hair care routine based on one’s hair type is important to keep the hair nourished, soft and healthy and ensuring that the products are used in the correct order will optimize their performance. The key is using products that are right for one’s particular hair texture and goals.
The Ultimate Hair Care Ritual
Brush Hair
Purpose
A good hair brush will help clear your scalp of dead skin cells, natural oils and product buildup and stimulate the scalp to increase blood flow.
Application
Carefully brush through dry lengths from root to tip. Never brush hair when it’s soaked, as it is at its most vulnerable. Use a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle wet hair.
Pre-Shampoo Treatment
Purpose
Pre-shampoo treatments soften, detangle, clean, protect, hydrate and repair hair in order to keep hair healthy, strong and shiny.
Application
Treatments are typically applied on either wet or dry hair before shampooing with a regular cleanser.
Type
Pre-shampoo hair treatments can come in any number of formulations, including butters, conditioners, hair masks and hair oils.
Use
Treatments aren’t for daily use. Save this step for once a week (when you’re not using a hair mask or conditioner).
Shampoo
Purpose
The main purpose of shampoo is to remove dirt and oil from the surface of the hair fibres and the scalp and provide hair with a shimmer and sheen.
Application
Thoroughly wet the hair and lather a good amount of shampoo into the roots. No need to shampoo the tips of the hair. Rinse with cold water.
Type
There are many types of shampoos depending on your specific hair type and goal: Clarifying, volumizing, moisturizing, curl-defining.
Use
Use Shampoo every time you wash your hair.
Hair Mask
Purpose
The benefits of using a hair mask include: shinier and softer hair, added moisture, reduced hair breakage and damage, less frizz, a healthier scalp, stronger hair and less environmental and product damage.
Application
Hair masks work best on damp hair (not soaking wet), so it's best to squeeze out any excess water before applying a deep conditioning mask. Leave on for a few minutes before rinsing.
Type
Choose a hair mask that is well suited to your hair type and that contains as few preservatives and chemicals as possible.
Use
Save this step for once a week, especially if your hair type is dry, you use heat styling tools often or you color your hair. Only use on days when you’re not using a pre-shampoo treatment or conditioner.
Conditioner
Purpose
Deep conditioning involves using a conditioner that will add moisture and strength back to the hair and leave the hair smooth for combing.
Application
Apply conditioner only on the mid-lengths and ends of the hair (It will cause the scalp to get greasy faster if applied on the roots). Rinse with cold water.
Type
For best results, use the corresponding conditioner to your shampoo.
Use
Use conditioner after shampooing hair. Only use on days when you’re not using a pre-shampoo treatment or hair mask.
Towel Dry
Purpose
Towel-drying hair removes excess water from hair without causing damage (as wet hair is extremely fragile).
Application
Gently press a clean and soft towel over wet hair to take out moisture. Never rub or tug on hair.
Heat Protectant
Purpose
Heat protection sprays protect hair from moisture loss, frizziness, breakage and hair damage caused by heat styling.
Application
Spray onto towel-dried hair, from root to tip, then brush through to make sure the product is evenly distributed. Apply ~ five minutes before using any heating tools.
Leave-In Treatment
Purpose
Leave-in treatments provide hydration, lock in moisture, tame flyaways, prevent frizz, repair hair, add shine and definition and give hair a more natural and wavy texture.
Application
Apply a small amount to the mid-lengths and ends of the hair. Applying too much can easily weight down hair and and make it look greasy, oily and super flat.
Type
Treatments can come in many different forms; oils, butters, sprays and creams. Choose a treatment that is suited for your hair type and goals.
Use
Use once or twice a week after drying hair, especially if your strands are damaged, overly dry, or color-treated, as they can help rehydrate and repair hair with continued use.
